Xubuntu?
December 27, 2006
Came across xubuntu from ubuntu’s webpage. Xubuntu claims that -
“Xubuntu is a complete GNU/Linux based operating system with an Ubuntu base. It is lighter on system requirements and tends to be more efficient than Ubuntu with GNOME or KDE, since it uses the Xfce Desktop environment, which makes it ideal for old or low-end machines, thin-client networks, or for those who would like to get more performance out of their hardware.”
Ha?. I test this linux distro in a AMD-K62 500mhz having a 128mb ram, and 8GB of HD. Results? It sucks, even the installation stage. Installing Xubuntu from a Ubuntu, major suck!.A newbie will pulling his hair off. The Test system boots up slow, even the login and sessions. I download and install Abiword for my word processing needs. Guess what, it took up 1:20 seconds to load and somethings a dead-lock.
For me, xubuntu is really not for old computers(in desktop type), even they use Xfce as the desktop environment.
I will go for Debian, DSL or even PuppyLinux your old computers.
Note:
1. No offense to ubuntu/xubuntu advocates. It’s only an opinion from a pointless person.

I just tried Xubuntu on my Core 2 iMac and is was soooooo slow. 30 seconds to start Firefox is a bit much… it launches in 0.3 seconds is OS X. Gnumeric does not start; Xfce is super buggy; Openoffice writer takes a minute to load and I am left with a corrupted title bar. Yuck. I wonder if the Blue Gene/L is fast enough?
